Exploring the Journey of Getting a Scalp Tattoo

December 15th, 2025

Scalp micropigmentation artists are able to camouflage scars from accidents and FUE (follicular unit extraction) and FUT (follicular unit transplantation) treatments, as well as conceal bald patches. Scalp Micro USA offers scalp micropigmentation treatment in multiple locations, including our clinics in New York, South Florida, Houston, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Here is more information about the process of receiving a scalp tattoo:

Consultation With a Practitioner

Schedule a video, call, or in-person consultation with a hair tattoo artist. Scalp Micro USA offers free consultations. For a phone call consultation, send in photos of your scalp and hair loss. During the visit, you and your artist will go over your hair loss condition to determine if a scalp tattoo is a good option for you. Your artist will assess your skin texture and make recommendations for what treatments may be appropriate. They will also discuss your appearance goals with you and provide you with tips on how to take care of your tattoo.

Customized Treatment Plan

As part of your consultation, your artist will work with you to create a customized plan. This includes deciding on a hairline design and haircut. You can bring reference photos to your consultation or see our treatment gallery for ideas. Your artist can recommend styles based on your age, facial features, and head shape. Hairline options include rounded, broken, receded, and straight. For haircuts, buzz cuts and shaved hairstyles are good choices if you have lost a significant amount of hair or have surgery scars. If your hair is thinning, look into a faded or tapered cut. You can also maintain a longer hairstyle if you have a healthy hairline. Your artist can show you a digital rendering of what the result may look like to help you visualize the results of your tattoo.

The practitioner will also create a pigment that matches the color of your roots and your skin tone. We achieve shades of red, brown, black, and gray by diluting the pigment with water. The dilution helps prevent the colors in your scalp tattoo from changing or appearing too saturated.

As part of your plan, your artist will decide the number of sessions you will need. Clients usually require two to three scalp micropigmentation sessions. These are scheduled 10 to 20 days apart.

Tattoo Appointment

Before your scalp micropigmentation appointment, follow any instructions given by the artist to prepare. This may include moisturizing the day before and washing your scalp to reduce oils. If you are planning on a shaved hairstyle, make sure to shave your head several days before. Wear comfortable clothing, such as a zip-up, that will make changing simple after your procedure.

During the appointment, the artist will first use a wax pencil to create a hairline mockup to confirm the design with you. They will then apply dots of pigment to your scalp to create the effect of hair follicles. The pigment will be freshly prepared for each of your appointments to keep the shade looking natural.

After the appointment, wait about five days before engaging in heavy exercise, shampooing, or exposing your head to direct sunlight. Wear a hat and apply antibacterial ointment to the treatment area. After the tattoo has healed, regularly apply moisturizer and sunscreen. Between appointments, remember to wash your scalp and get a haircut. You can ask your artist for appropriate shampoo, moisturizer, and sunscreen recommendations.
