Four Things to Know About Scalp Tattoo Pigments

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is also known as scalp tattooing. Using the pointillism technique, artists can add pigment to areas of hair loss or scar tissue. Scalp Micro USA offers SMP treatments. Here are four things to know about scalp tattoo pigments:
1. Pigment Deposits Look Like Hair Follicles
The dots of pigment in a scalp tattoo resemble hair follicles, creating the effect of buzzed hair. Scalp micropigmentation provides a solution for scar camouflage, covering scars from hair transplants, plugs, or accidents. Scalp micropigmentation, or SMP treatments, can also cover areas of hair loss, fill out your beard, add density, and cover bald patches from alopecia. A shorter hairstyle or buzzed look is typically appropriate to help your tattoo blend in with your natural hair. If you have a healthy hairline, it is possible to retain a longer hairstyle.
2. Pigments Can Be Color-Matched
Pigments for scalp tattoos can be matched to a range of skin and hair tones to create a natural appearance. At Scalp Micro USA, one of our experienced artists collaborates with you to determine your preferences for your hairstyle and pigment colors and form a plan for your treatment. If you are not sure what style or color works best for you, discuss ideas with your artist or review photos of our past transformations. We create a customized blend for your pigment based on hair color, skin tone, and other preferences.
We use a black pigment for scalp micropigmentation. Our artists use distilled water to dilute the pigment to the preferred shade to match your roots. More water creates lighter shades of red, brown, and gray hair. Less water means less dilution, creating darker shades for darker browns and black hair.
Depending on skin condition and the amount of hair loss, our clients typically require two to four sessions of micropigmentation treatment lasting around two to four hours each. These treatments take place about 10 to 20 days apart. The pigment will be prepared for each appointment to ensure the shade stays consistent.
3. Scalp Tattoo Pigment Does Not Change Colors
The ink we use for scalp micropigmentation does not use additives or additional colors. It is more diluted than traditional tattoo inks, which helps prevent the pigment from changing colors or expanding over the years. It also prevents the colors from looking overly saturated after your tattoo heals.
The pigment is deposited just below the skin during the tattooing process. This shallower depth means that the pigment will eventually lighten slightly. The micropigmentation lasts about four to six years. You can schedule a touch-up session with us to restore fading. Touch-up sessions use the same technique as the initial tattooing, allowing our artists to adjust your hairline or the depth of your pigmentation as needed.
4. Direct Sunlight Lightens Pigmentation
For the first four to 10 days after your treatment, avoid direct sunlight on your scalp, as UV rays can cause pigmentation to lighten prematurely. Sunburns may also result in peeling skin, which can remove the micropigmentation. Wear hats, skullcaps, or other head coverings to protect your scalp. After your tattoo has completely healed, use a scalp-friendly sunscreen whenever you are outside.
High-intensity workouts that result in excessive sweat should also be avoided during this period to prevent damage to your tattoo. This also includes yard work and sports. Moisture buildup caused by sweat can result in bacteria growth and the displacement of the pigmentation. Do not go into chlorinated pools, hot tubs, or saunas for a month after treatment to protect your tattoo. Your artist will provide you with additional aftercare instructions, such as when you can wash your scalp with shampoo.
