How does the scalp micropigmentation process work?
If you recently discovered scalp micropigmentation and want to understand more about the process and how it all works, you’ve come to the right place!
As one of the world’s leading SMP providers, at Scalp Micro USA we have met and performed treatments on thousands of clients. Every individual who passes through one of our clinics has a different set of questions, depending on what research they’ve already done and how they interpreted their findings.
Here, we look at the treatment process from start to finish and explain what a client can expect from their experience with Scalp Micro USA.
Step 1: What to look for when researching providers
Scalp micropigmentation is a highly specialized treatment process that requires a significant level of skill to execute effectively. This is not the kind of treatment that should be requested of your local tattoo parlor, or from a company that does not possess a reasonable client portfolio.
- View their treatment gallery. How realistic and undetectable are their results? Are they consistent? Is there any Photoshop or lighting trickery going on?
- Ask how long ago they trained in SMP, and how many treatments they have performed. Make sure the information they provide can be verified.
- Request photos of treatments that match your own requirements, in terms of similar skin tone, hairline design, age etc.
- When in doubt, ask to see their license and insurance documentation.
Step 2: The consultation
Any reputable clinic should offer consultations. At Scalp Micro USA, we conduct in-person consultations, but we also accommodate clients who wish to have their consultations by phone, video chat or even by email or messenger.
Prepare your questions beforehand, and make sure you receive comprehensive answers to all of them. Experienced technicians should be able and willing to handle any query you put their way.
Step 3: Treatment session scheduling
We schedule 2-3 treatment sessions in advance, depending on your individual requirements. Each session lasts on average about 2-3 hours and is scheduled a minimum of 10 days apart. The third session can sometimes be optional depending on the client and the desired result. As always, we will do our best to work around your availability.
Step 4: First session
The first sitting at your chosen Scalp Micro USA clinic (New York, Los Angeles, or Houston, Texas) is used to lay a ‘foundation’ of follicle replications. We work with you to create your perfect hairline, discuss what style you are looking for, and the treatment commences.
When you leave our clinic after your first session, you will see an immediate difference and a full look appearing. You will notice some fading after the first treatment, which is completely normal. We need the second and third session to complete the look of a full buzz cut.
We will provide you with optimal aftercare guidelines you’ll need to follow until we see you again for your second session about 10-14 days later.
Step 5: Second and third session
During this session, we dramatically increase your replicated hair density to create the appearance of fullness and eradicate any sign of hair loss. We spend a lot of time blending your pigmented areas into your real hair for a perfectly seamless finish. We can make minor adjustments to the hairline in this session as well.
Depending on your progress, we will do one of the following:
- Schedule your third session for about 10 days later
- Review your treatment after a month to establish how the treatment looks
- Declare your treatment complete
If a third session is required, this is usually because your pigment retention rate has varied and we still need to fill in some areas of the head. This is common and is remedied during your third (and usually final) session. This is also an opportunity to make tweaks or hairline adjustments.
Step 6: Your aftercare and guarantee
We will provide you with immediate and long-term aftercare guidelines to keep your treatment looking at its best.
If you would like us to conduct an in-person or photograph-based review of your treatment at any time in the future, of course, we are more than happy to do so.
You won’t need to come in for a touch up for 3-5 years. However, should you want to come sooner feel free to shoot us a call or email at any time.
Every client is different and has highly individual requirements, but we hope this overview has answered some of your questions about how the scalp micropigmentation process works. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact our team.
