Do Hair Oils & Essential Oils Really Help Hair Loss?

May 4th, 2021

While more research is needed, some evidence does exist to suggest that some essential oils can help hair grow to grow healthier and stronger. A solution like scalp micropigmentation, also known as scalp tattoo, is more reliable and guarantees almost instant improvement in the look of your hairline. But for those who want to try natural remedies for hair growth, some oils might be helpful.

Can I use Essential Oils after a Scalp Tattoo?

It’s important to follow all the recommended instructions for healing after scalp micropigmentation treatment. However, once your scalp is fully healed—about a week in most cases—it is safe to massage, shampoo, or shave the treatment area. Any oil considered safe for topical use could be fine to use on the scalp.

Even essential oils that do show promise for hair growth don’t work quickly. You may not see results for weeks or even months. However, when used correctly, essential oils cannot harm your scalp tattoo.

Are Essential Oils Safe?

Most essential oils and nut/seed oils are safe for cosmetic use. But keep in mind that essential oils should be diluted with a non-clogging “carrier” oil such as almond or jojoba oil before applying to the skin or scalp.

Pouring essential oil directly from the bottle onto your skin is never recommended. Some oils can cause irritation, contact allergies, or even burns. The most common formula is to mix .5ml (approximately 1 teaspoon) essential oil into 2 ounces of carrier oil.

Few people have adverse reactions to essential oils, but some precautions are still needed, especially when using an oil for the first time. Follow these tips to keep yourself and your household safe:

  • Store essential oils out of the reach of children
  • Always perform a patch test when trying a new oil.  To complete a test, apply a few drops of diluted oil on your inner arm, cover it with a bandage and leave for 48 hours
  • Avoid getting oil in the eyes, nose, or mouth
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after applying essential oils
  • Do not take essential oils internally
  • Be aware that some essential oils are highly toxic to pets
  • Citrus essential oils can increase sun sensitivity, do not apply them before going outside or to a tanning booth
  • Essential oils can interfere with the effectiveness of some medications. Consult your physician or a qualified aromatherapy practitioner if you are currently taking prescription medications

By following these guidelines, you can experiment with essential oils safely and see if they promote new hair growth for you.

Natural Oils for Hair Growth

Androgenetic alopecia, also known as male pattern baldness affects at least 30 million women and 50 million men in the U.S. There are many prescription and over-the-counter topical treatments intended to slow hair loss or encourage new growth. Many of them already contain essential or natural oils, but that doesn’t always mean those ingredients are actually effective or will be effective for every user. However, a few natural oils may actually offer help.

Peppermint Oil

A 2014 study of peppermint oil showed it as successful in stimulating hair growth in mice. The naturally occurring menthol in peppermint essential oil may improve blood circulation in the scalp, which can improve hair health.

Rosemary Oil

Rosemary tea and rosemary oil have been used for centuries to prevent dandruff and naturally color graying hair. The anti-inflammatory agents in rosemary are found to stimulate hair follicles and may promote hair growth. One study found rosemary oil to be as effective as minoxidil, the main active ingredient in Rogaine.

Lavender Oil

The chemical compounds in lavender oil are shown to increase the number of hair follicles and deepen the depth of follicles. In aromatherapy, lavender is used to promote restful sleep, so trying this treatment before bed could be doubly helpful.

Pumpkin Seed Oil

Pumpkin seed oil may aid hair health in three ways. First, it improves blood circulation in the scalp, second, it eases inflammation of the hair follicles, and third, it is believed to block DHT—a hormone that causes hair loss.

To try any of these treatments, first, dilute the oil in an appropriate carrier oil. Use only one essential oil at a time. This way, if you see improvement, you’ll know which oil is helping, and if you experience a bad reaction, you’ll know which one is the cause.

Gently massage the blend into your scalp and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Wipe the scalp clean. Repeat the treatment daily if no irritation is present. Stop using immediately if you notice any discomfort or redness on your scalp.

The Bottom Line

Essential oils could be helpful for some people. But don’t expect an overnight miracle. Improvement, if any, will be slow. If you stop the treatments, any progress will also stop. Scalp micropigmentation offers a faster and more permanent solution to hair loss. And it doesn’t leave oil stains on your pillow!
