Scalp Micropigmentation: Aftercare Guidelines

September 12th, 2022

Hair loss is common, but there are plenty of modern solutions. At Scalp Micro USA, we are at the forefront of long-term hair loss treatment with scalp micropigmentation. Our professional team can help restore the appearance of your natural hairline. After treatment, there are a few guidelines to follow in order to maintain your results.

What Is Scalp Micropigmentation?

Scalp micropigmentation is an innovative hair loss solution. During treatment, a technician uses a tiny, precise applicator to pigment the skin on the scalp. This creates the appearance of hair follicles or very short hair, like a buzz cut. Results look very natural and last four to six years before you’ll need a touchup.

The Treatment Process

At Scalp Micro USA, we do everything in our power to make the treatment process as easy as possible. The first step is a consultation. During this appointment, we’ll discuss your hair loss and your desired look. The consultation is free, and you can choose to do it over the phone or in person at one of our clinics.

Currently, we have locations in New York City, Los Angeles, Houston, Austin, Chicago, and South Florida. If a phone consultation is more convenient for you, we will ask you to send us pictures of your hair loss. By the end of the consultation, we will be able to determine a natural hairline that accomplishes your desired look.

The second step is to schedule your treatment. You’ll probably need two or three sessions to get full results. They should be scheduled 10 to 14 days apart to allow enough time for healing between sessions.

The third and final step is to receive your treatment at one of our professional locations. The procedure is straightforward and our staff members are talented artists. You’ll notice top-tier results immediately after your sessions are complete.

Aftercare Guidelines

Although scalp micropigmentation is a semi-permanent treatment, it is necessary to follow aftercare guidelines for the best results. After treatment, your technician will provide you with full instructions, including our recommendations for the fastest healing and the best overall look. Here are some things we ask our clients to do to achieve optimal results.

Avoid Sweating

Immediately after treatment, you should do your best not to sweat. Sweating pushes moisture through the skin, and that moisture can take some of the pigment with it if it hasn’t had time to settle. We recommend that clients wait four to five days before hitting the gym or doing any strenuous exercise.

Don’t Scrub, Shampoo, or Shave

For similar reasons to those listed for not sweating, you should not scrub or shampoo your scalp for four to five days after treatment. The pigment in your scalp needs time to settle, and shampooing the area could cause problems. Scrubbing could lead to faded results or color that is lighter in some areas than others.

You should also avoid shaving your scalp for four to five days. Shaving can irritate the area, which can affect the quality of your final result.

Hold the Rogaine

Many clients ask if they can continue their hair loss medication during and after micropigmentation. If you use Propecia, you can continue using it during and after treatment. If you use Rogaine, you should take a break from using it during your micropigmentation treatment and for 30 days after. This topical treatment, like shampoo or sweat, can cause problems with the settling of the pigment. It can also interfere with the healing of the skin on your scalp as it adjusts to the micropigmentation.

Avoid the Pool

After micropigmentation treatment, we recommend our clients avoid chlorinated pools, saunas, steam rooms, and tanning beds. All of these environments can cause problems by not allowing the pigment to settle properly. Give your skin to breathe and adjust for a few days.

Live Your Life

One of the best things about scalp micropigmentation is that it solves the problem of hair loss with no downtime required. For most clients, treatment is painless and straightforward. You may notice some redness for a few days, but there should be no need to take time off from any of your regular activities. Feel free to walk out of treatment and go to work or school right away. You can even wear a hat if you want to!

What if Results Fade?

It is normal for results to fade about a week after your first treatment. If you see fading, don’t worry. Your technician will add more density in your second and third treatments.

It is also normal for micropigmentation to fade over the years following the completion of treatment. When this happens, touch-up treatments can restore your results. Schedule an appointment and we’ll be happy to restore any faded pigment.
