What is hair pigmentation?
If you’re losing hair and looking for ways to treat it, you might have come across hair pigmentation. With hair pigmentation, you can fill in any bald spots and reduce the contrast between the skin and hair follicles. This creates an illusion of a short buzzcut.
Now, you’re probably wondering what exactly hair pigmentation is and what it can do for you. Similar to a tattoo, hair pigmentation treatments involve injecting pigment or ink into the skin. However, the needles used in hair pigmentation are much smaller.
Let’s dive further into hair pigmentation and what it entails.
Is hair pigmentation the same as scalp micropigmentation?
One big question that might confuse some people is whether hair pigmentation is the same as scalp micropigmentation. Rest assured. Hair pigmentation and scalp micropigmentation are essentially the same thing. Scalp micropigmentation is also known by other names like SMP, scalp tattoo, scalp pigmentation, micro scalp pigmentation, hair tattoo, and much more.
It’s important to note, though, that another form of hair pigmentation called tricopigmentation is not the same as scalp micropigmentation. Unlike scalp micropigmentation, tricopigmentation is a more temporary form of micropigmentation. Compared to scalp micropigmentation, which lasts for 4 to 6 years, tricopigmentation lasts 6 to 18 months.
There are other differences between scalp micropigmentation and tricopigmentation such as process measures and cost.
What about hair pigmentation versus tattoos?
Hair pigmentation, or scalp micropigmentation, is not the same as a tattoo. Tattoo ink is typically injected much further into the skin—around 3 to 4 skin layers deep—whereas micropigmentation ink is placed around 2 skin layers deep. If the ink is placed too deep into the skin, the ink may have a higher tendency to disperse. With SMP, the ink looks sharp and clear to better emulate the appearance of hair follicles.
Since hair pigmentation uses a smaller needle, the pain experienced is often much less than that experienced with a tattoo. It should also be cared for in a similar manner as tattoos. This means limited sun exposure, wearing an SPF, among other precautions.
The type of ink and tools used in hair pigmentation also differs from those used for tattoos. Hair pigment inks can be personalized to your specific hair color. There are also pigment inks and pen machines that are specifically made for hair pigmentation. The best inks are those that contain natural ingredients like Folicule. Otherwise, certain added chemicals or ingredients could cause irritation and allergic reactions.
Should I get hair pigmentation?
Hair pigmentation treatments may be right for you if you have a receding hairline, any bald spots on the crown, or are completely bald. One advantage of scalp micropigmentation is its precision in getting the perfect shape and hairline. You’ll come out of scalp micropigmentation with a clean buzz cut look that is easy to maintain.
It’s best to go to an experienced, trained hair pigmentation specialist. Dealing with hair loss can already be difficult enough on its own. That’s why it’s important to vet the potential specialists you get scalp micro pigmentation from. At Scalp Micro USA, specialists are highly trained to get the best possible outcome.
