Best Aftercare Practices for Scalp Micropigmentation

June 20th, 2023

If you have an appointment with Scalp Micro USA for scalp micropigmentation (SMP), we recommend following a few key aftercare practices. Our unique micropigmentation process involves realistically replicating hair follicles by depositing pigment into the skin of the scalp. After your treatment, you will experience immediate results with minimal downtime, but you must follow our aftercare guidelines to help your scalp heal and look its best. We have created a list of things to avoid and actions to take after receiving your SMP treatment to get the best results.

What To Avoid After Treatment

Following these aftercare practices for the first five days after your treatment can lead to less fading and a smoother healing process. You will be able to resume most of your daily activities after the fifth day of aftercare. Here are the post-treatment steps to take:

Avoid Sweating

Avoid any activity that causes you to sweat for the first five days after your treatment. This includes working out, spending time in warm environments, or going to a sauna or steam room. Sweating after your hair tattoo may irritate or interfere with the retention of the pigment.

Avoid Shampoo

Don’t shampoo or wash your scalp for five days after your treatment. Avoiding shampoo will help prevent your treatment from fading prematurely and allow your scalp to heal. Certain cleansing shampoos may also irritate or dry out your skin.

Avoid Trimming

Do not shave or trim your scalp with any razor. Even gentle trimming can put pressure on the scalp, and this pressure can affect the final appearance of your hair tattoo. Trimming your scalp could also interrupt healing and cause more issues than benefits.

Avoid Sun Damage

The first five days are the most sensitive time for your scalp, but you should avoid direct sun exposure for at least 21 days. After 21 days, your scalp should be able to handle moderate sun exposure. For optimal long-term results, continue to limit exposure whenever possible. You should also avoid self-tanners for at least 21 days.

What To Do After Treatment

We want your scalp micropigmentation healing process to be as quick and comfortable as possible. Follow these tips after your treatment:

Wear a Hat

Wear a hat to protect your scalp if you are out in the sun. Wear a hat during activities like gardening or walking, and wash it regularly to reduce bacteria buildup. Avoid using sunscreen on your scalp during the first stage of healing.

Pat Scalp Lightly

If you have an itch on your scalp or notice excess oil, gently dab it with a cloth and warm water. If you are experiencing irritation, this should offer you some relief. Avoid scratching and picking at your scalp until the area has healed.

Get Enough Rest

After your treatment, you don’t have to worry about sleeping in specific positions. You can sleep however you want after treatment. It’s key to get rest, as sleep can aid your body’s healing process.

Drink Water

Drink plenty of water to help hydrate yourself and your skin. Limit dehydrating beverages like alcohol and caffeinated drinks, and focus on fluids that support skin recovery. Keeping your skin moisturized can help limit irritation and promote faster scalp healing.

When To Resume Normal Activities

On days six to 10 after your scalp micropigmentation, you can resume most activities. At this point, you can enjoy the following:

  • Trim: If you use a wet shaver, wait a few additional days before using it to trim your scalp.
  • Exercise: It is still best to avoid saunas and steam rooms for the next 30 days.
  • Rinse: Gently wash your scalp with warm water and a mild soap.
  • Moisturize: Apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer 1-2 times daily. At Scalp Micro, we recommend Folicule products due to their natural ingredients, which won’t interfere with the pigments used in micropigmentation.

Preparing for Your Next Session

Most clients will require two to three sessions to achieve a finished look. Your artist will communicate with you throughout the process to make sure you are satisfied with the result. You will have to wait 10-14 days between appointments to allow for healing. Before your second treatment, trim your hair, wash your scalp, and moisturize. Your artist should also be able to determine how many more sessions are needed to achieve your desired results at your second appointment.

How Long Does Scalp Micropigmentation Last

Scalp micropigmentation is considered semi-permanent. Our practitioners don’t use traditional tattoo ink. Instead, they use a pigment that allows them to match your hair color. This pigment is customizable and looks more natural than tattoo ink. Your treatment will last between four and six years before beginning to fade. If you notice fading at this point, you can schedule a touch-up session. For more details on what to expect and how to care for your treatment, please visit our FAQs page.

Maintaining Your Hair Tattoo

There are a few factors that determine how long your treatment will last:

  • Lifestyle habits
  • Sun exposure (and whether or not you use sunscreen regularly)
  • Scalp products you use regularly
  • Adherence to the aftercare guidelines
  • Smoking habits

Hair tattoo fading is typically expected to occur after four to six years. To keep your scalp micropigmentation treatment looking fresh, moisturize daily, protect your scalp from the sun, and follow aftercare guidelines after receiving any treatment. These small maintenance steps can significantly impact the longevity of your hair tattoo.
