Caring for Your Hair Tattoo
Scalp micropigmentation, also known as a hair tattoo, is a hair loss treatment that can give your scalp the appearance of a buzzed hairstyle. The process involves tattooing small amounts of pigment into the scalp to mimic hair follicles. The treatment is low maintenance, but to maintain the longevity and vibrancy of your hair tattoo, you should follow your artist’s aftercare instructions and a few other guidelines to maintain your results long-term.
Immediate Aftercare
Immediately following your treatment, your Scalp Micro USA artist will give you some aftercare guidelines to follow. These guidelines can include instructions to:
Avoid Excessive Sweating
For the first five days after getting your treatment, you should avoid excessive sweating. Sweat can remove some of the pigment before it has had time to set. Avoid going to the gym or sitting in the sauna. You should also avoid swimming in the pool or anything else that involves excessive moisture.
Avoid Shampooing or Shaving
Shampoo and water may make it more difficult for the pigment to settle. This can lead to uneven results. You should also avoid shaving, as it can irritate your scalp and affect the quality of your results. Avoid these activities for five days following your treatment.
Avoid Sun Exposure
Sun damage and sunburns can cause the pigment to fade prematurely. You should avoid prolonged sun exposure for the first few weeks following treatment. After this point, you can resume moderate sun exposure with the use of sunscreen.
Avoid Scratching the Scalp
Scalp micropigmentation treatment may irritate your scalp for the first few days. You may be tempted to touch or scratch the scalp to bring you temporary relief. This can interrupt the healing process and increase the risk of infection, which could impact your results.
Avoid Applying Rogaine
If you use Rogaine, you should avoid using it for several weeks after your last scalp micropigmentation treatment. Similar to shampoo, it can interfere with the settling of the pigment. It can also interrupt the healing process.
Maintaining Your Results Long-term
You can expect your hair tattoo to last for four to six years, depending on how well you maintain your tattoo. We can schedule you for a touch-up appointment if you notice fading. To maintain your results long-term, follow these guidelines:
- Moisturize daily. Scalp dryness can affect the appearance of your scalp tattoo and can be uncomfortable.
- Avoid extended sun exposure. Sun exposure can cause the pigment in your scalp tattoo to break down and fade. If you know you are going to be out in the sun for a long time, make sure to use SPF or a hat to protect your scalp.
