What Can I Do for My Skin To Improve My Scalp Tattoo Experience?

June 20th, 2023

At Scalp Micro USA, we have helped over 10,000 men beat hair loss with our scalp tattoos. A scalp tattoo is a cosmetic tattoo that mimics the look of a short buzz cut. Before coming in for your treatment, you will want to make sure the skin of your scalp is as healthy as possible. Not only does this make the treatment more comfortable for you, but it can also help us create a seamless tattoo that you can be proud of.

How To Prepare Your Skin for a Scalp Tattoo

The skin on your scalp can be sensitive. To improve your scalp micropigmentation (SMP) experience, take good care of your skin before, during, and after your treatment. We recommend that you follow these guidelines to prepare your skin for your SMP session:

Wash Your Scalp

Washing your scalp can help keep your skin clean and prepare it for your scalp tattoo. We recommend washing your scalp at least once daily in the weeks before coming in for treatment. On the day of your treatment:

  1. Make sure you wash your scalp to remove any excess dirt or oil.
  2. Consider using a fragrance-free, gentle shampoo that is less likely to irritate your scalp.
  3. If you have sensitive skin, or any skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis, speak with your artist during your consultation about if there are any extra steps you should take to make sure your scalp is prepped and ready for treatment. They should be able to offer insight into any topical medications you may be using and whether you can use them before or after your treatment.

After your treatment, you should avoid washing your scalp for five days. If you have an itch, are experiencing irritation, or notice any extra oil, use a cloth and warm water to dab lightly at your scalp. This should offer you relief without compromising your treatment.

Moisturize

In the weeks leading up to your scalp micropigmentation treatment, we recommend moisturizing your scalp once or twice each day. We recommend using a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer. Dry and irritated skin can make it more difficult for your artist to complete your scalp tattoo, and it can also make the process more uncomfortable. Moisturizing your scalp helps to soften and soothe the skin prior to your appointment.

Similar to washing your scalp, you should also avoid moisturizing your scalp for the first five days after treatment. After the first five days, we recommend returning to moisturizing your scalp once or twice a day.

Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated can go a long way toward keeping your skin healthy. If your skin is dehydrated, it could make it more sensitive. Dehydration can also slow down the healing process. Be extra diligent about your water intake in the days leading up to your treatment, the days between your treatment, and post-treatment. You can increase your hydration by drinking water or eating foods with high water content, such as fruits or vegetables.

Avoid Sun Exposure

Sunburn can delay healing and potentially compromise the outcome of your SMP treatment. This is because the sun can break down the pigment we use during micropigmentation and cause your scalp tattoo to fade faster. Avoid sun exposure for the days leading up to your treatment and for 21 days after your treatment. We recommend wearing a hat and doing what you can to protect yourself from extended exposure. After 21 days, your scalp should be able to handle moderate sun exposure. When your practitioner clears you to begin putting products on your scalp, use sunscreen to avoid sun damage. We recommend Folicule’s Scalp Sunscreen to protect your head from the sun.

Follow Aftercare Guidelines

After receiving your treatment, your practitioner will give you a set of guidelines to follow. Many of the guidelines are the ones that are outlined in this post, including detailed instructions on washing your scalp, moisturizing, avoiding sun exposure, and staying hydrated. We also recommend avoiding sweating and trimming your hair in the first five days after your treatment, as well as getting plenty of rest to help your scalp heal. Following these guidelines helps promote healthier skin, which can help us achieve the best treatment result possible and improve your overall scalp tattoo experience.

Your practitioner can also give you specific guidelines catered to you and your skin type. If you have any skin conditions, speak with your practitioner about them. They can recommend specific products or provide extra guidelines.
